[Sweet] Angel

A little over 40 years ago, and the summer before my 6th grade year, I’d moved to a new neighborhood. I made two friends before school started; one being Alison who lived directly across the street. Once school started, I made two more friends. The five of us became a group and we called ourselves “The Sweets”.

We have maintained our friendship, through time and distance for over 40 years and that’s pretty special. This week we lost one of our Sweets. It’s hard because we should have been old ladies together…

Yesterday I was checking my plants to see who was thirsty, and as I do so I say their names. I have this one plant I bought last month that didn’t have a name. Each time I’ve watered her over the last month, there wasn’t a name that I found suitable or had a meaning to fit. So I said, I’d think of a name next time.

Yesterday, as I touched this plant I said, “THIS is Alison!” It brought the biggest smile to my face because for a plant named String of Hearts, Alison is the perfect name!

Last night I decided I would take Alison to the beach for sunrise because she loved both and always commented on my pictures saying she wished she was there.

Today she was there.

Dear Alison,

Rest In Peace “Sweet” Angel. You’re flying free now. Continue to watch over me, and I look forward to caring for you here in this plant. She has beautiful hair, should I give her eyelashes too? I’ll look in that!

Love Kenya
